Hiking map of the district capital Pirna
Pirna is located about 20 km southeast of Dresden on both banks of the Elbe. It is also known as the gateway to Saxon Switzerland because the Elbe Sandstone Mountains begin upstream of the river, the German part of which is also called "Saxon Switzerland". The name of the city is derived from the Slavic expression Na Pernem ("on the hard stone") and refers to the abundant sandstone in this area.
The cycling map shows the entire area of the historic old town. Pirna is the starting point of the Malerweg into Saxon Switzerland and the end point of the Saxon Wine Route.
