The Tharandter Wald (approx. 60 km²) is located southwest of Dresden on the northern edge of the lower eastern Erzgebirge between the Wilde Weißeritz in the east and the Colmnitzbach in the southwest. The old Saxon Silver Road led from Freiberg along the eastern edge of the Tharandt Forest to Dresden.
The map sheet 31 shows the villages Freiberg (eastern part), Tharandt, Bobritzsch-Hilbertsdorf, Klingenberg, Höckendorf, Dippoldiswalde (district Reichstädt), Freital, Rabenau, health resort Hartha, Mohorn, Weißenborn, Halsbrücke and Reinsberg. In addition to the Tharander Forest, the river valleys of the Freiberger Mulde, the Bobritzsch, the Wild Weißeritz with the Klingenberg dam, the Rabenauer Grund the Red Weißeritz and the upper Triebisch Valley are popular hiking destinations.
