The Pfaffenstein above the village of "the Königstein priest" is a popular tourist destination in Saxon Switzerland. It is also a remarkable table mountain from a historical point of view.
Already during the construction of the inn around 1890, the then innkeeper Hermann Keiler from Pfaffendorf made his first finds, which the innkeeper immediately recognized as archaeologically valuable. Afterwards, the search for it continued systematically over the decades. The finds from the Bronze Age were assigned to the Lusatian culture and prove an early settlement of areas in the mountainous region.
One of the most famous rock formations in Saxon Switzerland is the rock needle Barbarine on the southeast side of the Pfaffenstein. It was a popular climbing destination for decades. Since the summit head became unstable, the rock had to be closed for climbing in 1975 and was renovated and fortified in 1979/1980. The eastern side of the mountain, which was ruggedized mainly by a massive rockfall, plays an important role in the reintroduction of the endangered peregrine falcon in Saxon Switzerland.
