The illustrated book is a comprehensive and up-to-date book on the fauna of Saxon Switzerland and contains about 70 species of mammals, over 250 species of birds, 22 amphibians and reptiles and 51 species of fish. The focus is on characteristic or faunistically valuable species such as the seven- and garden dormouse, otter, lynx, chamois, black stork, eagle owl, kestrel and peregrine falcon, Pygmy flycatcher and fire salamander.  Observations on extinct animal species such as wolf, bear and capercaillie are not missing.
Pictures show the reader differences e.g. between dormouse, dormouse and garden dormouse, tower, tree and peregrine falcon, fir, pouch and willow tit, fence and forest lizard, grass and pond frog, adder and smooth snake.
Spread-maps show observations among other things of shrews, Bilchen, otters and fire-salamanders as well as the hatcheries of falcons, owls or ravens.
Valuable animals, as for example dormouse, kingfisher, peregrine falcons and fire salamander are introduced in detail.
